Feedback

The blog is progressing very proficiently and there is a really clear sense of the artist's image emerging from your research materials, which is great.  However, try to keep up with the posts set each work to make sure this is really as comprehensive as possible - you need to look at the kind of album artwork which is typical in this genre of music and I was also expecting to see some evidence of timeline/visualisations, even if they were not complete.

Peter & the Wolf; Record Label...

The record label I have chosen for Peter is ‘Moshi Moshi’, a small label based in London. It started around 13 years ago and features a range of artists, from the well known to the unknown. At the top end of the spectrum are acts like ‘Florence And The Machine’ and ‘Friendly Fires’. The music is a range of alternative styles from indie pop to anti-folk.

I think Peter would fit in well here, as the label does sign brand new, up and coming artists who may have a relatively small fan base, or exist only on sites like MySpace and YouTube. It doesn’t specify on a style of music, and Peter seems to fit in nicely between bands like ‘Au Revoire Simone’ and artists like ‘Lykke Li’.

Initial Video Pitch.

Above is our first pitch that we delivered to the class and teachers. The feedback was positive but drew our attention to the point that we have shot ideas, but no strong running theme throughout the video, which we will need to work on.
We have been discussing themes of madness, identity and sexuality in hope of developing the idea further.

Foreground lyrics...

Take on another shaft
Palms in the middle, hands in the middle

Walk out another road,
something is muffled, another chuckle.

This is a foreground.
It is a foreground.

A cross country mass
Take directions, can't connect it.

I'm not afraid besides; ten detected,
nine interrupted

A little jelly, fine
Powdered and fallen
ocean and solid

Something about this light

Take all evening
I'll just be cleaning

This is a foreground.
It is a foreground.

(The song is not so much lyric based but more music based, the lyrics do not come in until around 0:45 seconds)

Peter & the Wolf; Target Audience...

The target audience for Peter is a niche one. This type of music/artist doesn't normally appeal to a mass market, as they often don't have the budget to do so.

The audience age is slightly older than the mass market audience, aimed at more of a young adult - mid thirties group. The genre of music tends to attract quite an arty audience, who enjoy being immersed in unknown music and film, and who care more about the content than the popularity of the band.

They are always looking at the image of the band and therefore Peter has to keep fashionable and orginal to get respect and interest from this audience. It's not about a performance element in the video, this audience want to see a range of weird costumes with feathers and animal ears. They are open minded to Peter's ambiguous sexuality and hook into his contrasting vulnerability and ability to perform music in front of an audience.

What would your ideal audience members look like/be like?

Meet Jerad. Jerad is a 19 year old illustration student at Goldsmiths. He has been a fan of 'Peter and the Wolf' since back in the early myspace days. He loves the fact that Peter hasn't sold out, signed with a big label and become...god forbid...popular.
As a slightly effeminate young man himself, he feels more secure in himself knowing that he isn't the only man who wears face paint and wears girls clothes (his legs are way too thin to wear mens jeans). Jerad looks up to Peter as a role model, and habours a bit of a man crush on him.
Jerad is a serious fan. He has followed Peter from the start and intends to follow him throughout his career. He has bought all the singles (on vinyl of course, it is so blatently superior to CDs...and looks cooler) and has attended all the gigs he could afford the travel for.
Peter's music helps build Jerad's extremely complicated image which no one, including himself, will ever really understand. All he can do is keep wearing the latest trends and hope for the best.

This is Carla, more widely known as Carla_Bear. She is a serial blogger and hardcore music fan, being in a 3 part band herself, where she plays the Ukelele. She wasn't a fan of Peter at the start, but discovered him by chance at an art fair before he made it big.
Carla finds Peter's feminine side a little bit sexy and finds herself getting wrapped up in the mysteriousness of his ambiguous style. As a musician herself she really admires the fact that Peter writes his own songs and is heavily involved in the creation of his music and new video. She even takes inspiration from his work when writing her own songs.
Carla wouldn't be so bothered if Peter went mainstream, as she has grown out of that way of thinking, but it still annoys her a little bit when false and fleeting fans turn up to concerts, who care less about the music and more about the party. However she will remain loyal to her artist and buy the entire back catalogue as his career develops.

Song inspiration...

 Patrick Wolf - Lupercalia II

Patrick Wolf is a great style inspiration for our our own artist, with his outlandish costumes and vlunerable, troubled persona. His arty short films made us think about using slow motion in our video as our song is quite slow and it could help create an atmosphere around the track.

Noah and The Whale - Life is Life
Band Photo

This bands music videos are really stylized and we love the way they frame their shots and edit their videos together. In the video 'Life is Life' they use some really photographic images. The opening shot of the girl walking towards the camera for me is fascinating and I would love to produce something with a similar effect.

Bright Eyes - Easy Lucky Free

Conor Oberst is another troubled young artist we have drawn inspiration from. This video is interesting in that it only contains 1 shot throughout the entire video, where Oberst is drawing and illustrating the lyrics on a piece of glass. It was suprisingly engaging, and we didn't feel the need to skip ahead to the end of the video. We have a similar concept of our artist talking to himself by writing on a mirror, however I think for our video we may have to use other shots to fill in the gaps, as it might get quite boring.

Marina and the Diamonds - I am not a robot
Artist Photo
In this video Marina is seen in a range of different robot themed costumes where she lip syncs along to the song. It works well to keep a constant theme and carry it through the video. In our video we had a similar idea with our artist being dressed up as different people running with the theme of identity.

Melissa Etheridge - Message to myself
This video also plays with the idea of writing on a piece of glass, but it does use other shots and isn't restrained to 1 wide shot.

Track Choice; Foreground...

The track that we have chosen to use for music video is 'Foreground' by the 4 man band 'Grizzly Bear'.

The track has a very melancholic feel to it, its quite slow and relaxed, without being depressing. It has the potential to work with the imagery we give it to create something beautiful. We had initial ideas of slow motion and I think this track would accompany that really well.

'Peter and the Wolf'...

For our music video we have constructed a new fictional artist, who is releasing his first single.

Name: Peter and the Wolf
Genre: Indie/Singer/Songwriter

Peter is an artist who represents originality, melancholy and creativity. He is very much an outsider and feels like one, and this is shown through his melodies and lyrics. He is quite fragile as a person and his personality and style is quite effeminate.

Patrick Wolf - style inspiration

Similar artists and bands, who we drew inspiration from when coming up with the concept, are Patrick Wolf, Mumford and Sons, and Noah and the Whale. We came up with the name after looking around at these artists and realizing that a lot of them included animals. We also like the fact that it is a children's musical story as it gives it a cultural reference which the target audience will respond to.
